Monster Marlin in Cabo!

Giant Marlin caught in Cabo San Lucas

fishing in Cabo San Lucas

By Chris E.

Check out this monster. I was at the dock when it came in yesterday.

It bit a little Zukers 3.5 lure on an old rod with worn out 60 lb line. It broke one hook and was barely hooked on the other. The leader was worn almost through.

It was hooked on Saturday morning at 8 AM and it arrived on the dock yesterday afternoon around 2:30 PM. The scale the harbor master had there broke at 855 lbs, so they used an equation to calculate the weight: It is “length squared”, multiplied by the “girth squared” and then divided by 800 (I am not sure who the hell ever figured that equation out but it is the standard for weighing fish without a scale.

Anyway, after much deliberation, they came up with 1,215 lbs, which makes it the largest Marlin in Cabo. I have not checked, but it may be a line class record on 60 lb, but without an official scale, it will not qualify.

I spoke to the angler and he said he was on the fish for 27 hours. I did not ask if he took any bathroom breaks, or sandwich breaks or cocktail breaks, but assume he must have. He looked pretty tired and sunburn, but was smiling big and drinking a cold Corona and basking in the glory.

It is impossible to describe the mass of that fish. The girth was amazing.

It was for SURE a “grander” even if that weight equation was wrong, and there were some on the dock that thought it was 1,500+. It is so hard to judge when they are that big.

The tournament season is coming up. I am looking for another angler on my boat for Bisbee. Fishing dates are 19,20 and 21st of Oct. This is our year.

The new Bad Med is ready to roll!.

Bad Medicine Summer News! – September Report

Hello from Cabo:

It has been an incredibly  beautiful Summer here in Cabo.  The water is in the upper 80’s and it is as beautiful as I have seen in my 20 years here in Cabo. Totally awesome out there. We have all the makings for a great Fall/Winter fishing season, as the areas just North of here are covered with fish and the migration will begin soon, sending all pelagic species right here!

Badmedicine SportfishingThe excitement is already in the air, as the tournaments start next month. There have already been some MONSTER Blue Marlin caught this Summer and the Black Marlin are showing now. Everyone is breaking out the heavy gear and getting “tournament ready!” This is the best time of the year in Cabo.

After buying our new 35’ Cabo Sportfisher this past June, I believe I finally have it all ready to roll. Getting things “just right” takes a little time (and substantial expense), but we are now 100% “dialed in” and ready to hit the season very hard. My crew is so proud of their new vessel they can not stop smiling. The new Cabo is so much quieter and faster than our old boat, it is truly a pleasure to ride.

The big Tuna are here now outside on the 1,000 fathom curve. Many fat ones have come toMahi Mahi fishing the dock. Less fishing pressure and perfect conditions in the Summer months seem to equate to more of those 100-200 lb fish. There have been some full coolers headed North these days that’s for sure.

The Dorado are here but they seem to move in and out. Up on the Pacific side 1-3 miles off shore has been super hot action most days, and there is always the occasional Striped Marlin or Sailfish mixed in there. The mornings up there are magical. Glass calm seas and a short run from the dock.

The Bad Medicine has also finally got into the fly fishing action. I got some great equipment on board, and had a professional fly angler show my guys the basics. We have done well this Summer, but honestly we are still learning as when a fish comes up in the lures and the adrenaline begins flowing, we still are not 100% used to grabbing the fly rod. My captain Bernie still wants a bait in the water in seconds and most times he is hooked up the “traditional way” before the fly can hit water! That is a good thing I guess, but for those that want to seriously fly fish, we are ready for you.

It feels like the “good old days” in Cabo as this Fall is packed! We do have dates available on the boat for November and December, and a few dates still open in October.  We also limited space here at Cabo Villas Beach Resort and Spa for our fishing package you can see on either website. We look forward to serving you and to getting you on the water!

Bad Medicine Fishing Report

Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report

Week 33, 2011

Badmedicine Sportfishing

 Hello from Land’s end:

This is the Summer of all Summers. We have the most beautiful water here of all time. 85+ degrees and visibility up to 100’. Hot days and beautiful desert nights here in paradise.

Most of the Striped Marlin have moved North of here to cooler water, but they have been replaced by Blue Marlin and Sailfish! We are getting 2-3 shots per day on Sailfish and they are the most beautiful of all the Billfish species. They are hitting slow trolled Ballyhoo and lures as well. The Sails seem to run larger here than in Costa Rica and other areas where they are very prevalent. We see many over 100 lbs, and we only see these fish when the water is at it’s warmest, so it is a real treat to have them here now.

Bad Medicine EquipmentThe Blue Marlin bite has been spotty, but some monsters have already been caught. A few over 500 lbs have been brought in and almost daily you can listen to the radio and hear someone in the fleet screaming about getting spooled or broken off by a big Blue (many of the local fleet boats do not maintain proper heavy equipment for Blue and Black Marlin), but that is not a problem on the Bad Medicine. I carry 50 wide and 80 wide Shimano Tiagras on board and we are ready for just about anything.

The Dorado and Tuna bite sort of goes on and off, but they are here and it is just a matter of being in the right spot ant the right time. Some monster Roosterfish have been caught this Summer also. Many do not fish for them, so that fishery is incredible when timed right.

Summer is awesome here in Baja. The fishing pressure is less than half of what it is in the Winter, and all species are present. There is nothing like the feeling of running lures in the Summer on the 1,000 fathom curve here just 10 miles off shore. Literally anything can happen!

Click here:   www.badmedicinesportfishing.com    And also click here: www.cabovillasbeachresort.com  to see about some great packages available at Cabo Villas Beach Resort and Spa! We are walkable to the marina and located right on Cabo’s main beach in the “Heart of Cabo”.

See you on the water!

Know more about Deep Sea Fishing

Deep Sea Fishing means fishing in the deeper part of the sea. Deep sea refers to the deep layer of the ocean, called the ‘photic’ zone. Deep sea fishing is a serious game or sport, and it requires some level of expertise and dedication in fishing, unlike regular fishing which anyone can do. Most people take up this sport for the experience and the adventure, and not necessarily for food. Some even release their catch after taking photographs of their catch. There are different ways to catch fish – one can use a net, or use bait and hook the fish or you can even use a spear for some species.

You would need a boat to take you to the deeper end of the sea. You can always charter a boat if you don’t own one. Another good reason to charter a boat is that the boat captain will know the best fishing locations. Not only are they experts in location, they will make sure that you are travelling safely and also they will know about the endangered species, which the Government is very strict about preserving. Deep sea fishing charters have different packages to suit your need, and the number of hours you would want to be out in the sea. Some of the popular deep sea fishing areas are Gulf of Mexico, Areas around Florida and Phuket.

You’d need good fishing equipments. Now-a-days there are many sophisticated electronic devices such as fish finder, GPS, charts, etc which you can buy to increase your catch. There are many different varieties of fish in the deep sea, from sharks, tuna, dolphin, mackerel, kingfish, and lots more. It is important to bear in mind that that are some endangered species. It is good to bear in mind that you’ll need to have loads of patience as it might take hours before you catch your first fish. Don’t be disappointed if your catch is not as big as you wanted or if you didn’t catch a particular fish you had in mind. Sometimes it takes several trips to the deep sea to get what you want, which in fact makes this sport even more interesting.

It is also advisable to go over your plan in detail with your guide before you set sail. This is called ‘pre-sailing check’. Since you’ll be spending money for the experience, you should get your money’s worth if not in terms of catching plenty of fish, but at least in terms of the fun and adventure you get. Lastly do not drink too much beer while fishing, don’t forget to wear a sun screen and make sure you pack your camera.

Information On Fly Fishing

The sport of fly fishing has been around for years and years. In medieval times, anglers fished for food, but the sport has evolved over the years to become a real test of skills. Anyone who has become involved in the sport of fly fishing knows how addictive in can be – but in a very good way!

Fly fishing is markedly different from regular fishing. With plain fishing, you use lures and often live bait to bring fish to your line and hook them. When you are fly fishing, you use a fly that resembles a real insect that the fish feed on naturally. The line is longer and you mimic the movement of the fly or insect on top of the water so that the fish thinks they are biting at a real insect.

Casting is constant in fly fishing. You put the fly out in the water and then draw it back several times so that the fish thinks the fly is landing on the water and then taking off again. With regular fishing, you cast your line and let it rest until the fish bites making the bobber sink into the water.

You can catch some pretty hefty fish using either method, but when you are fly fishing, you have the opportunity to “battle” the fish for survival. This can be extremely satisfying as man battles nature for the top position.

Flies are made out of natural materials in fly fishing while regular fishing utilizes latex and plastic lures made out of man-made materials. Many avid fly fishermen say that the fish are much more attracted to the natural lure rather than the man-made ones. This, they say, makes fly fishing an amazingly satisfying sport.

You can fish just about anywhere – a local pond, a lake, or even a reservoir. When you are fly fishing, you will want to go where the fish are most plentiful. That means traveling (perhaps) to rivers and streams where fish like trout and walleye are known to live. The challenge in fly fishing lies in making the fly look real to the fish below water.

Fly fishing in remote places like Alaska and Canada are great vacation getaways. You can plan a fly fishing trip to many different spots including Mexico, South America, and even Russia. That can be a great adventure – much more so than just fishing your local lake or pond.

Chess has been called “the sport of kings”, but many avid fly fishermen consider fly fishing to be the real sport of kings. It takes skill, finesse, and a lot of patience to get good at fly fishing. Thousands of anglers couldn’t agree more. When you’ve been fly fishing once, you’ll want to go back over and over and over again. May the fish bite well for you!
